Censorship vs Pedantic Hedonists
July 19th 2008 18:16
Orbler’s, recently the issue of censorship has been popping up. The point isn't fully about censorship, none of us advocate censorship, with the exception of self censorship; the self discipline to exercise the rules of common decency on Orble.
The idea is simply to keep controversial photos, icons or language off the home page and if that is the point of your blog, to use the not family friendly option prior to posting.
That allows you to keep your blog intact and those who choose not to be bothered with foul language; photos or icons can set their home page to view only the family friendly offerings, usually those that have minor children.
This is a business site, offering access to a public forum, and as such more of a benevolent dictatorship than the wild west show many other sites offer and we all subscribed to it's few rules when we signed on to use this free service.
If this site turns into a free fire war zone, it will loose revenues from advertisers, when that's gone so has the impetus to make the service available for free.
As a practical matter, take the time to rate the content of your post so that it reaches your intended audience.
That's the heart of the matter, not censorship.

Sorry to diminish the tone of this really well expressed, with something of value to offer, post, Raven, but well done.

I'll be much more self monitoring in the future.
Impressionable teens visiting my home and using my computers opened my eyes about the time I was fussing with someone the other day. And it struck me; I was being sucked into the morass of their world.
I opted out.

But since I started this new job, Ive changed somehow. Maybe its the lack of drugs in my system, or the razor edge exhaustion, but lately Ive felt terribly argumentative. Like its my God(dess) given right to cram my opinion down others throats. Not to change their mind, cos I know that wont happen, but just to piss them off. Since so many people piss me off, I suppose Ive decided that karmically, its time I got into it myself.
As for censorship, I abhor people telling me what I cant watch, or look at. Recently Kman and I have found more dvds and games we have been waiting for are yet again banned in Australia, thats why Ive been flying off the handle. Sure yeah, rate it however you like - but to ban it from the entire country? How the hell can a few killjoys have so much power?
As for self censorship, I mark for mature content, but honestly, I forget the family friendly filter all together. Its quite a new feature to me, and at the end of the day, if a kiddie jumps on for an animal story its easy enough once on my blog to click on a mature content. Then its up to net nanny, I guess. And to think, every second while Im writing, Im censoring, because I know orble isnt technically 'adult'. You should see how much I actually swear.

For the most part I agree with your comments, and god knows I constantly forget about the family filter too.
