Conquering the Evil Advance Themes Page

Deciphering the Control Panel Options: a beginners guide

At some point in time, we all go temporarily insane with ambitious dreams and decide to dress up our Blog(s) a bit. Concerning this matter sage advice would be to finish obtaining your PhD; it’ll be quicker, easier and eminently more satisfying in the long run. If, however your obsession is indeed over whelming, here’s what I discovered while passing through that perversity of common sense.

Hopefully, by this stage in the game you have learned that options are available to you with the Modify, Settings and Themes buttons on your personal Control Panel. Don’t be fooled by these innocuous little guys, they can humble even the most stalwart of souls. Let’s examine their functions and find out how they will impact our blog lives for foolishly finding change desirable.

Modify ~ here we name and establish control options for our blog
• Blog tag ~ name your post
• Permissions ~ who’s putting stuff on you blog- keep the group small
• Comment Permissions ~ it’s not always good to allow anonymous comments
• Members ~ these folks can post to your blog, but make them apply
• Publication ~ yes invites Orblers to critic your work, control members input
• Format ~ I use Double Columns w/out ads, no mid post ads, default post works
• Post Name ~ post works
• Display ‘Add To’ Buttons ~ but of course, they’ll help grow your blog
• Display Recent Post List ~ not for this bird, it adds clutter, your call here
• Blog Forum ~ no works for me, moderating a forum is like herding cats
• Post Categories ~ 20 works for me, but the drop down is a repetitive nuisance
• Post Fields ~ not using this, I have enough problems to contend with daily
• Signatures ~ I made a list of 5 or 6 and named them after each blog
• Modify Blog ~ bang on the Modify Blog button and stand ready to be surprised

Settings ~ this is where you can personalize your blog beyond the realm of reason
• Title Settings ~ display title, no, upload a header photo and snappy tag line
• Blog Profile Settings ~ yes, then write a pithy descriptive note about blog purpose
• Post Settings ~ leave the font sizes alone, and I don’t show full blog at home
• Google Referral Codes ~ I haven’t gone to that dark side as yet
• Other Blogs Box Settings ~ sure, why not
• Archive Settings ~ titles only, how hard is it to click on a button to see full posts
• Category Settings ~ 20 Posts per category page works for me
• Post Summary ~ I’m a Tile sorta guy myself
• Post Image Link ~ hell yes, there’s ego’s on the line
• Show Post Thumb Images in Menus ~ yup, images grab faster than words
• List Only Family Friendly Posts in Orble Menu ~ no, I want to be offended
• Change Settings ~ click the Change Settings with reckless abandon

Default Themes : Cautions
• remember that if you later make a theme change using a default theme, you’ll loose your photo, so keep it handy
• save and name themes that you like, it may well save your sanity later
• now we shall move to the next level, brace yourself

Advanced Themes: Declassified ~ almost

Strong minded bloggers have entered into this realm only to be lost among the myriad and disconnected maze of options: they say that on a calm, still moonlit night that you can hear the pitiful voices of the lost crying out for a mocha latte.

Blog Portal Display ~ top and bottom bars, everything goes between these twins

Page Body Display Settings ~ everything gets placed on top of this stuff
• Background Color ~ the colors between the bars
• Font ~ mess with this and stuff on the title bars run amuck
• Background image ~ cool but the photo you use gets buried under everything else

Header Display Settings ~ your blogs title, logo and photo go here
• Background Color ~ it will surround your photo or text
• Border Color ~ it will surround your background color
• Text Color ~ it is replaced if you use a photo
• Text Font ~ same as above, what a surprise
• Font Size ~ affects text font and overall size of header if used
• Font Weight ~ I use the bold, but then again, I use a photo for the header
• Padding ~ a spooky setting that I set at 10px so stuff doesn’t crowd other stuff
• Padding left ~ if using a photo set at 0px or you header will be off center
• Rounded Corners ~ I like them because I’m edgy enough
• Title Spacer Top ~ go with the default to start
• Title Spacer Bottom ~ same as top, adjust slowly

Page Display Settings ~ the area that will border your post, comments and other stuff
• Background Color ~ this will surround your blog post
• Border Color ~ this will surround your background color
• Padding ~ controls surround width, can you feel the power
• Rounded Corners ~ sure, why not
• Page Background image ~ use a transparent background if you do this

Title Display Settings
~ seems to get usurped by posting logo link choice
• This can be modified under settings or set up here
• Font ~ Pick something that’s readable
• Text Color (1) ~ Black is always appropriate to start with
• Text Color(2) ~ Grey1 is an option that’s workable

Blog Profile Display Settings ~ affects or creates the note describing your blog
• This can be modified under settings or set up here
• Blog Profile Color ~ affect the color of your descriptive text, oddly enough
• Blog Profile Font ~ your choice

Blog Display Settings ~ finally, your magnificent thoughts are show cased here
• Background Color ~ pick something that doesn’t make the reader go blind
• Border Color ~ this will surround your background color
• Font ~ please select something readable if you want to have your offering read
• Padding ~ default works
• Rounded Corners ~ a judgment call to be certain
• Text Color (1) ~ Black works for me
• Text Color (2) ~ Black works for me but I dunno what it affects

Post Display Settings ~ this deals with items within the context of your post
• Border Color (1) ~ this is the outside perimeter border
• Border Color (2) ~ this will underscore your post title and text separators
• Text Color (1) ~ this will be the color of text titles w/in post
• Text Color (2) ~ this will be the color of your post test, black always works
• Font ~ again, pick something easier to read than your report card

R U There Yet?
Other Blogs Box Display Settings
~ it’s the stuff after your blog and comments, I hope
• Background Color ~ eh, keep low key so attention is focused on your thoughts
• Border Color (1) ~ this is the outside perimeter border
• Border Color (2) ~ this will underscore your post title and text separators
• Font ~ don’t make me repeat myself . . . more than I have, easy to read
• Padding ~ the default works very well
• Rounded Corners ~ edgy is good
• Text Color (1) ~ title and topics, black is nice
• Text Color (2) ~ other notes, a gray1 is nice, but I’m biased

Google Links Display Settings ~ Google funds this operation, so give them their dues
• Ads Config ~ use the default white, it make them folks happy
• Background Color ~ this surrounds the default white and make it yours
• Border Color ~ this is the outside perimeter around the background color
• Padding ~ the default is fine
• Rounded Corners ~ sometimes just the bottoms or tops is enough
• Remember, complex the sites load slowly, especially with modem access

Blog Menu Display Settings ~ the sidebar which promotes your stuff, left screen
• Ads Config ~ use the default white, it make them easy to see
• Background Color ~ the main color within the sidebar area
• Border Color ~ this is the outside perimeter color around the background
• Padding ~ the default is fine
• Rounded Corners ~ not needed, but it’s your world
• Text Color ~ the information text color
• Oddly, this deals with the title box of your sidebar, go figure
• Title Background Color ~ first box, top left, white color is easier to see
• Title Border ~ stay with your color scheme, or someone may hurt you
• Title Font ~ remain calm and select something readable
• Title Text Color (1) ~ the text color of major title items
• Title Text Color (2) ~ the text color w/in the box naming your post, first on top
• Title Text Weight ~ go for the bold
• Title Background Image ~ why, nothing fits into that title box, no how, no way
• Under the categories stuff are links to your other works, their settings are special
• Link Border Color ~ stick with your theme
• Link Text Color ~ basic black is way cool
• Link Text Weight ~ normal should be ok, but I do like my bold, just not here
• A background image in a title button, has me scratching my head for now
• Background Image ~ just because you can, don’t make it right
• Did you know that you can add buttons and your blog links to your sidebar? Well, you can, but you can’t mess with the Orble sidebar and live; here’s how its done: create a new post, name it Middle Menu Section and in the text body add the following, [LINK=www.yoursite.com separately for all the links you want to add, and end with [/HTML]. You can embed videos between the same HTML code.

Orble Menu Display Settings ~ the side bar that promotes Orble stuff, right screen
• Background Color ~ match your sidebar color works, but it’s your site
• Border Color ~ again, stick with your theme
• Font ~ we’ve discussed this earlier
• Padding ~ stick with the default, it works
• Round Corners ~ not needed, but it’s still your world
• Text Color ~ stay with the choice you made for your sidebar
• Oddly, this deals with the title box of your sidebar, go figure
• Title Background Color ~ first box, top Right, white color is easier to see
• Title Border ~ stay with your color scheme, or someone will hurt you
• Title Font ~ remain cal, breath deeply and select something readable
• Title Text Color (1) ~ the text color of major title items
• Title Text Color (2) ~ the text color w/in the box naming your post, first on top
• Title Text Weight ~ go for the bold
• Title Background Image ~ nothing fits into that title button, no way not today
• Under the Orble button are links to other works, don’t try to bother them
• Link Border Color ~ stick with your theme
• Link Text Color ~ basic black is still way cool
• Link Text Weight ~ normal should be ok, but I do like my bold, be consistent
• Background Image ~ just because you put one in the sidebar doesn’t make it OK

Post End Ads Display Settings ~ beneath your signature, this is the last gasp ad
• Ad Config ~ the default white works . . . still
• Background Color ~ perhaps transparent is a good option, but that’s just me
• Border Color ~ easy now, let’s not go maverick at this point in the game
• Padding ~ defaults are good and safe too, most of the time

Tile Display Settings ~ my icon photo showed up here when I uploaded it from Settings
• Why is a header photo showing up here, I dunno, an Orble mystery I suppose
• Tile Background Color ~ transparent seems to work
• Tile Border Color ~ surrounds perimeter of background color
• Tile Background Image ~ my header photo showed up here
• Background Image Horizontal Alignment ~ working on it later,
• Background Image Vertical Alignment ~ duh, still working on it later
• Background Image Repetition ~ hell, I don’t know, gimme a break here

Other Display Settings ~ I haven’t found this yet, lemme know when you do
• Navigation Bar Background Color ~ white works
• Navigation Bar Border Color ~ stick with your theme

Now, as you may have guessed, this is just a reflection of my experiences with this stuff and I was on board a year before I decided to make a change. What a pain. This layout just isn’t all that intuitive for me, but it’s not here to meet my foibles.

I'm off to find some medications, my PTSD is acting up again. Did anyone find this helpful as a starting point? Or am I the only Orbler to go two out three with the advanced themes page and loose four bouts?

Raven

PS ~ Really, I'm fine . . . honest.

I kicked a goal, thinking oh, Raven has put on a little game for us, but no, it was one of 'those' it took me completely by surprise as did the rest of your blog.

Colourful, isn't it?

You have to be a damn good guesser to get thru some of those advanced themes and if you're not careful blue becomes green, pink becomes orange becomes red and you can't read what it says any more.

I think I'd go for the PH D if u can find an honest University nowadays, on second thoughts, stick with the simplicity you have created even with the bizarre colour scheme. Of course I like it, it really draws attention to itself.

Does your PTSD not allow you to put your clothes on. Or are you going for a bike ride later?

I'm opting for a bike ride, we did the long arduous walk earlier today. And frankly katyzzz, the advanced themes would start a saint to screeching like a banshee.

But of course.

Orange and Blueberry Sherbert ice cream, a reward for making it through the themes page.
